Goodbye Chelsea
I remember the first time I discovered the Chelsea Hotel, it was when reading one of my favorite angry teenager reads And I Don't Want to Live This Life - the story of Sid & Nancy by Nancy's mom, Deborah Spungen. Although the Chelsea was a grim and dark scene described by Spungen, I became so curious about this place and soon learned that it was a haven for artists and dreamers like myself. I dreamed of being there and never really outgrew that fantasy. Almost 10 years later when I moved to NYC, I got to experience the Chelsea first hand.
In 2002, my friend and photographer Hannah Neal came to the city to shoot many projects one of which at the time was my upcoming release Wish. When in New York, Hannah stayed at the Chelsea like many photographers, musicians, and artists do and I couldn't wait to meet her there to begin our day of photos. The moment I opened the rickety front door to enter into the lobby, I felt the electric vibe that saturates the hallways. It lives up to grittiest of grit New York has to offer and yet, there's a alluring feeling there that makes you want to stay and be a part of it's rock and roll history. I'm so sad to see it go. Looks like new condos will be taking it's place. Maybe there's still time for someone rescue this treasure.
Enjoy some of our photos from that day in the photo section of my site.
The Chelsea Hotel on West 23rd Street, a longtime haunt of artists and musicians, closed to guests on Sunday, and its future is uncertain.

Kites, birthdays, & ... music!
I love this time of year! Not only because March is my birthday month - ha!, but I love the turning of the season with the high winds and the tease of the sunny skies. Also, being an Austinite, we get to dedicate a whole week in March to the appreciation of music during the SXSW Music Conference. Although I celebrate music everyday, during this week, it's nice to share my love and excitement for music with everyone from the neighbors, the grocery store clerks, the coffee baristas, my yoga class mates, the girls' preschool teachers, to even the office curmudgeon who actually gets a little lift in his rarely seen smile as we are all talking about our favorite bands. Maybe one day he'll even chime in!
The hardest part is deciding who to go listen to. If you don't have a wristband or badge, that's okay because there are so many venues with music happening all day long. Some of the best performances through out the years I've caught by just running into something wonderful unexpectedly. I encourage you to get out and about and listen. Let me know if you discover a new artist that you love. I'll report back to you on some of the shows I check out as well. Isn't it wonderful that we host this amazing event? Come on, take advantage of it!
Join me:
Wed. Mar. 16th - 7p @ Flipnotics 1601 Barton Springs
Sat. Mar. 19th - 1p @ The Rockin Tomato 3003 South Lamar
No wristbands or badges required, all ages, & no cover. Sets are 45 mins, but both venues have a full line up of great singer-songwriters etc, so once you’re there you can hunker down and take in a few shows.

Drowning in the sea of love
... where everyone would love to drown ....
I can't get this song out of my head. And I can't wait to perform it on Thursday the 24th at the Whip-In Austin, TX. I'll be playing Fleetwood Mac's Sara and more from the alluring Rumors record. Rumors was my mom's most favorite record and we listened to it endlessly growing up. I now realize it's one of my favorite records too. I love this music forever. Come sing with me Thursday 8p - 10p. I'll also be doing some of my original material as well.
Hold on the night is coming and the starling flew for days ....
